Artists Against Apartheid Concert Review (Expert)

Lloyd Cole and The Commotions / Billy Bragg / Love And Money / The Big Dish at Barrowlands, Glasgow

NME, 13 September 1986

I'm worried about Love and Money. They've been comprehensively screwed by well-meant but stupid record company manoeuvring, and if the upcoming single "River Of People" doesn't crack the playlists, it must surely be curtains for them. Yet tonight they came on stage at a packed Barrowland and quite literally ripped the place apart. Despite a severely malfunctioning keyboard, they played with ferocity and utter assurance which invoked an astonishing audience response (screams, yet!) and was completely convincing. Okay, so James and his pelvic thrusts tend towards the laughable, but with aching ballads like "You're Beautiful," contrasting with the sheet-metal funk of "Cheeseburger," this was a genuinely awesome performance.
